Immediate volunteer positions available weekday afternoons in the gift shop, tower tours, and/or exhibit area.

Like most other lighthouse preservation societies, our Society relies upon quality volunteers to accomplish our mission. We are always looking to add more volunteers to help us provide the public with a quality experience. If you're interested in helping out, please contact us. You may inquire at the Lighthouse, or contact us by phone or e-mail.

Volunteers usually contribute approximately 4 hours per week.

Volunteers can choose from the following:

  • Working with school groups
  • Tower Tours
  • US Life Saving Service
  • Naturewalks
  • Gift shop
  • Office work
  • Maintenance
  • New Fresnel Lens Building
  • Boat House

Volunteer Positions

Gift Shop Sales (G) – Operate gift shop sales, help customers, ring up sales,
(Prices are marked & include the sales tax – most items are priced in even amounts).
Restock inventory.

Tower Tour Top (TT) – Lead visitors to top. Give tour along the way, or stay at top
For a 1-2 hour block of time. Provide visitors with information and/or answer questions.

Tower Tour Entrance (TE) – Positioned at table in connector. Collect fee (if not collected in gift shop). Keep track of the number of people in the tower at any one time. Hand out certificates to visitors as they exit the tower.

Maintenance (M) – Help with maintenance functions. Ranges from routine cleaning & trash pick up and yard maintenance to painting and small repair jobs etc. Historic preservation of the interior, beacon operations, work special events (set-up, take down). Wedding Coordination.

Office (O) – Help office staff with paperwork, copying, phones, mail orders etc. Cataloguing reference material, filing. Scheduling volunteers.

School Groups– 9:30 AM – 1:00 PM School Days – 3 groups of 15 students each participate in 3 separate programs (as follows). Each program is presented 3 times per morning.

1. Tower Tour (ST) – Lead students to the top & back down, providing history & facts along the way.
2. Life Saving Service (LS) – Present information and demonstration of life saving equipment in the life saving service room.

3. Nature walk (NW) – Lead groups along the boardwalk/beach, using the trail guide to provide information to students.

4. New Fresnel Lens Building – meet and greet visitors and explain the significance of the Original Fire Island Lighthouse Fresnel lens

5. Boat house – show visitors the equipment used by the United States Life Saving Service in the rescue of people from stranded ships


Life Saving Service Beach Apparatus Drill (BAD)
– Re-enact the drill. Pull cart to swale area, rig Breeches Buoy to wreck pole. Provide visitors with information. Expect to do once in June, July and August (Thursday @ 7PM). Set up Mini Demo on other occasions.

Junior Lighthouse Keepers Program (JLK) – (Tuesday & Wednesday during July & August – 10AM – Noon).
Supervise small groups of children as they participate in various program activities. Volunteers who wish to provide a relevant program/activity are encouraged and welcomed to do so. Please contact a staff member with your idea, so that it can be scheduled.

Off-Site Fairs (OF) – Provide information and literature at off-site events. Sell merchandise when permitted.
